Air Shipping Guide

Everything you need to know about air shipping from the UAE to Egypt and the Gulf countries.

When time matters more than cost, air shipping is the answer. This guide explains when the price difference is worth it, and what to expect from this method.

Facts & Figures

Why Dubai Is a Global Air Cargo Hub

Dubai International Airport is no longer just a regional airport — it has held its place as the world's busiest airport for international passengers for the seventh consecutive year, and it's also the world's largest hub for international air cargo by available capacity, serving 63% of the world's destinations across 88% of its countries, through 76% of the airlines operating globally (Airports Council International).

On the cargo side specifically, dnata — one of the largest air cargo handlers in Dubai — handled more than 1 million tonnes of cargo in Dubai in a single year alone, and more than 2.9 million tonnes globally in the latest financial year, across more than 90 airports in 16 countries. This scale of infrastructure and operational expertise is what makes Dubai an ideal launch point for air shipping to Egypt and the Gulf countries — regular daily flights, not weekly or occasional as with smaller airports.

Air Waybill

The Document That Governs Every Air Shipment

Every air shipment — whatever its size — is issued an Air Waybill, the equivalent document to a sea Bill of Lading, but with one key difference: an Air Waybill is not a negotiable document of title — meaning it isn't used to transfer ownership of the goods between different parties during the journey the way a sea Bill of Lading sometimes can be, it's purely a contract of carriage and receipt. This makes delivery procedures in air shipping relatively simpler and faster on arrival.

Every air shipment is also subject to International Air Transport Association (IATA) regulations, specifically the Dangerous Goods Regulations, which precisely define what can and can't be shipped by air, and how to package and classify any item that may need special handling. These regulations are the reference we use when assessing any shipment before accepting it for air shipping.

What does this mean for you as a customer? Nothing that requires technical knowledge on your part — we're the ones who verify your shipment complies with IATA regulations, issue the Air Waybill on your behalf, and let you know upfront if your shipment needs any special classification or packing before it's accepted.

When It's Worth the Cost

When Is Air Shipping Worth the Higher Cost?

Air shipping is the most expensive of the three methods, but it's worth it in specific cases:

Duration

How Long Does the Air Journey Take?

Just 3 to 5 working days from pickup to delivery — far faster than land (10–25 days) or sea (20–45 days). This large time difference is what makes air shipping worth its higher cost in the cases it suits.

What Can Be Shipped?

What Can, and Can't, Be Shipped by Air?

Most personal and commercial items can be shipped by air, but there are size and weight considerations — air shipping suits smaller to medium items better, and isn't the economical choice for moving an entire home or large commercial containers (land or sea makes more sense there). Some materials are also subject to restrictions specific to air shipping (like large quantities of liquids or certain substances) — we'll let you know about any restrictions relevant to your shipment when you reach out.

Cost & Calculation

How Is Air Shipping Cost Calculated?

Air shipping is usually calculated by the kilogram, factoring in volumetric weight (the parcel's actual size, not just its weight) in some cases — a large but light parcel may be charged based on its size rather than its actual weight. This differs from land and sea shipping, where calculations are closer to the total weight or volume of the entire shipment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is air shipping suitable for moving furniture?

Possible for individual small pieces, but it's not economical for moving an entire home — land or sea is a better fit there.

Is there a maximum weight for air shipping?

It depends on the shipment type; we'll walk you through the detailed limits when you reach out based on what you want to ship.

How do I know if air shipping is worth the cost for my shipment?

If time matters more than cost for you, or your shipment is relatively small and urgent, air is the right fit.
